Backpack to School Project Back Pack

For all new members, program or full facility, Your YMCA is running a community service project called "Backpack to School". Bring in a backpack anytime in September - filling it with school supplies optional - and your annual program membership or joiner's fee (for new members) will be waived. All donated backpacks will be given to school children in Holyoke, South Hadley and Granby who otherwise cannot afford one. We encourage all members to bring in backpack to help with this worthwhile project.

YMCA ACTIVATE AMERICA!

Primary focus of the Holyoke YMCA is activating America.

One of the most important health issues in the country today is America's epidemic of obesity and inactivity. As the nation's largest network charitable, not-for-profit organizations we are focused on improving lifestyle health for youths and adults. We, as an organization, are positioned to help address this health crisis.

Just how important is physical activity?

In a word EXTREMELY. We all know exercise is good for us but many do not know that exercise is critical for sustaining good health. At the YMCA we are dedicated to providing everyone the opportunity to improve their overall health through the wide variety of sports and recreation activities we offer.

Birthplace of Volleyball

Volleyball was invented by William Morgan at the Holyoke YMCA in 1895 as a game for sedentary businessmen. In 1984 William G. Morgan was honored posthumously as first inductee of Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1985. The volleyball hall of fame at 444 Dwight Street in Holyoke opened to the public on June 6, 1987.
