Our Heritage
Birthplace of Volleyball® Home of Volleyball™
In 1895, William G. Morgan — physical director of the Holyoke YMCA — invented the game of volleyball in the gymnasium of this very building. What began as a game for local businessmen has grown into one of the most popular sports in the world. The Greater Holyoke YMCA proudly carries the designations Birthplace of Volleyball® and Home of Volleyball™, honoring a legacy that is woven into the identity of this community and this institution.
